Evaluation on the impact of legislation and standards on the design process in relation
to the profitability of the business
Legislation and standards can impact the profits of companies in many ways, an example of this would be if O-Sep would not follow the health and safety tests on their designs then they may be fined, this would affect the profits of the company. Copyright laws on designs may also affect O-sep, if they were to design an alarm system that is based on an alarm system of another company that is copyrighted then they can be fined large amounts of money.
An example of legislation in the design process that impacts the profitability of the business is EN 50131-1. This legislation states that components that are used must be classified safe for the environmental classification and must be given a security grading, this may mean that more expensive components must be used as the components must suit EN 50131-1. The design process may also be lengthened because EN 50131-1 states that states any additional functions must not influence the operation of mandatory functions, this may mean additional design thought is needed which can make lead times longer.
Another example of legislation that would impact the profitability of the business is The electrical Equipment Regulations, this regulation states that electrical equipment must be CE marked; this is a certification mark that certifies that the product conforms with health, safety, and environmental protection standards. Designing of the alarm system to conform with these standards may mean that different more expensive materials must be used and it may leave design constraints due to the environmental protection standards.
Much like the Electrical Equipment Regulations, the WEEE-Directive also negatively impacts business profits as all electrical equipment and components have to meet a required standard in terms of environmental sustainability. The products have to be designed while taking into account the waste material and recyclable materials and making sure that they are putting the smallest possible negative impact on the environment; this may mean that more expensive WEEE conforming materials have to be chosen and it may also issue longer lead times as more labour has to be put into the design process.
Although legislation and standards can negatively affect a businesses impact, I believe that it is a downside that must be dealt with because without legislation and standards then unsafe products would be designed and produced. For example, if the alarm system was designed and did not conform to The Electrical Equipment Regulations then the alarm system may be very unsafe for industrial use; this could lead to injuries happening in the workplace which could then lead to the company being fined/sued. Without the legislation and standards the product would likely not have any exact specifications to meet which would make it perform poorly. I also think that in the grand scheme of production, the legislation and standards would not drastically impact profits as the company would be selling more products due to them being known for meeting standards and performing to specifications.
